The Inquisitor

It actually took nearly a year before they found the woman, in that time the boy visited his home several times, but he did not return to being a village Priest. When the task was done the two monks took him to their home, to Pyre. He was the one who decided to join them, he had no ambition to do the job that Thadeus and Pietr were doing, he could see the truth in their claim that the universe was growing darker and perhaps he reasoned, if he were to add his prayers to the group on Pyre, perhaps that would go towards the cure. A drop in the ocean of course, but as Thadeus put it, even an ocean is comprised of a numbe rof drops. And so he left his home to live on the harshest of all of the known worlds, to meditate and pray for the souls of everyone.

It was not until they arrived at the starship that the boy realised his companions were actually members of the Inquisitorial Synod. The ship was large, it took a hundred men to fly it. And it was parked in a hidden valley far away from the spaceport. The pair had another secret too, on board the ship they each had a set of Inquisitorial Robes. Unlike simple hessian robes, these were a converted defensive suit designed to protect the wearer from all sorts of different kinds of evil. They granted protection from the powers of sathrists, psychics and antimonists as well as the blunt force of projectile weapons, axes, knives and even offered some defense against energy weapons. They included several other benefits too, the ability to see in the dark and to hear danger from far away. Thadeus explained that the suits were extremely rare, only the most devout members of the Inquisitorial Synod were permitted to wear them. In fact the number of master inquisitors was always, and only equal to the number of working robes that the temple could provide. As such they only used them sparingly, the encounter with the group at Greenhaggs-end was expected to be a simple investigation into some strange misdeeds that a local viscount had reported. Damage to equipment, basically exactly what he had told them was common knowledge to the local villagers.

The interior of the ship was stark, bare metal and dim red lighting. This was apparently to assist with their continued meditation and prayer, their duties as monks of the Temple of Avesti was not relinquished by the addition of their duties as Inquisitors. The most memorable part of the journey although, it was very long was actually the arrival at the monastery on Pyre. The Abbot greeted him with open arms and he immediately felt like he had come home. Everyone at the monastery knew the gospels as well as or better than he did. The few Theurges amongst them even helped him to find the rituals which were hidden within the pages of the Gospels, like the one he had been shown by father Janus. Some had effect, while others did not so the study concentrated on how to find them rather than actually learning how to use them.

He, like all of his brother Theurges were at great risk of suffering the sin of pride. And so it became part of the routine to be beaten and to accept the punishment as a supplicant to the faith. This was unpleasant, but it was part of the tradition of the order so he could not oppose it without the risk of Hubris. He learned a great deal about the dangers of Hubris, how to avoid it, how to recognise it in himself and in others and what to do if he fell foul of it inadvertantly.

Six long years passed.

Brother Thadeus returned, he had been away as long as the boy had lived as a monk on Pyre. Thadeus invited him to the top of the pyramid, where the eternal flame was kept burning by the eldest of the order.

Thadeus explained that he was nearing his mid life and it was customary that he hang up his robes. Here before the elders he surrendered his robes and offered forward the boy as a chosen replacement. The tale of the hunt for the woman and the battle against the chain demon was told. The boy sat silently. He neither wanted nor held ambition for the post, he knew it was hard work and that he would face greater hardship than the occasional supplication. One of the elders used the rite of knowing the false heart, on him when he was questioned. He resisted without meaning to, and apologised as soon as he realised his error. He offered his only blessing to assist the assessor. This did not go down well. He was asked again if he wanted the role of Inquisitor, and again he explained that he knew the job and the hardships involved. They challenged him, they asked if he was capable. They accused him of being either scared or lazy. He calmly told them that he was not able to be his own judge, and that he would always seek the council of the elders about such matters. Thadeus spoke for him, he told them that the boy was humble and that the masters of the temple had taught him well, he explained that the boy was entirely passive in the matter, he had neither ambition nor fear of the role. He said that if the boy was given the role he would do it well. He said that if the boy was not right for the role the council would know this and the boy would feel neither dissapointment nor relief about the decision.

The pair were dismissed, and summoned before the fire again the following night. The elder's had reached their decision. Thadeus was commanded to join the abbot as his second, he would leave the Inquisitorial Synod and return to the main Temple Avesti. His days of wandering were finally over. Thadeus was genuinely grateful when he thanked the elders for the post. Then they named the boy Inquisitor in brother Thadeus' place. He too bowed his head in gratitude. He genuinely felt neither pride nor disappointment, he simply accepted that his role was now different.
