The Tamiir-Quah

This reclusive Shoanti clan are rarely seen, save for the occasional raid. It is said they fly down at night and steal what they want.

In reality the legend of the flying raiders is an exaggeration. The wind clan, as the name translates to, are an ancient quah of secluded Shoanti humans who are divided into dozens of smaller clans that make their homes amoung the mountains of North-West Varisia and the Southern edge of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. It is in the winter that they raid the quah's of the Nolands and surrounding areas, for it is known that only the strong survive the winter. When the winter abates, and the land becomes more fruitful the raids end, the disguises and masks are put away and the small villages of the Tamiir-Quah in the mountains journey out to trade and begin preparation for the next winter. Arguments still happen, the bargains are complex and the chief's must reach an accord which benefits their clan, even at the cost of cheating the other. Although in the trade arena these matters are settled by the tradition of combat between champions.

It can be confusing to the few explorers who venture into the north that a fair number of the plains quah's also consider themselves Tamiir-Quah. Often the distinction is only between the tatooes that adorn the quah. Those who call themselves Tamiir-Quah tend towards marks of flight and creatures of wind and air. Amateur explorers should be wary of assumtion here, as offence is easily caused, and the tatooes are Shoanti symbols rather than images.

The mountain quah's tend to dress in thick furs, adorned with feathers and other marks of flight. The greatest chiefs have been known to wear the beaks of young Roc's woven into their decorative head dresses. More commonly the feathers lightly decorate fur which is styled into the vulture-like hunch that they are known for. When a quah raids another they hide their faces behind masks, so as to preserve good trade relations in the summer. Their is a complex relationsship, all chief's know that the quah they trade with has raided them, but they can not be sure which raid the quah is specificaly responsible for.

It is this cold war of stealth which is actually responsible for the legend of the flying raiders, and they all play along with this in a tradition that has long since lost its humour.
